Exotic Honeymoon Destinations You’ve Never Heard Of
Romance sometimes appears in unexpected places. Where will you spend your honeymoon? Kerry and Phil holidayed in the Maldives, Jenny and Dom went to Barcelona and your next-door neighbours hit the Greek Islands. But what if you’re looking for something – and somewhere – completely different? Here are a few of our favourite suggestions for an out-of-the-ordinary honeymoon experience.
1. Wishing on shooting stars in Chile
If you’ve got a romantic streak, what could make you happier than snuggling up with your new spouse beneath a starlit sky? And to see the world’s most beautiful night skies, you’ll need to head to Northern Chile, where the lack of light pollution and high altitude makes for a stunning display.
You’re best off staying in the wine region of the Elqui Valley where you don’t just get to sample Malbec in the daytime, but visit the four local observatories at night. After some scientific enquiry, put what you’ve learnt to the test by glamping in a geodesic dome tent at the Elqui Domos site – complete with telescope and roof that opens to the night sky.
Consider extending your holiday by adding on a side-trip from the bohemian desert village of San Pedro de Atacama to the breath-taking Bolivian salt flats – the Salar de Uyuni.
2. Protecting each other from wild beasts in Africa
It’s said that everyone should do a safari once in their lifetime and so why not make this your honeymoon experience? Take the best of Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia to carve out a romantic break that’s the right mixture of activity and relaxation combined with some of the most famous sights on the planet.
And going on safari doesn’t just have to be about spotting the Big Five. Start your trip with a few days around Victoria Falls – a magical place best enjoyed from one of the area’s luxury hideouts such as the Islands of Siankaba lodge, in the middle of the Zambezi River. Head from here to some of Botswana’s best wildlife-spotting parks and then onto the wetlands of the Okavango Delta. Make the journey by light aircraft to spice things up! If you need some beach time, do the short hop over to the beautiful white sand beaches of Mozambique’s Benguerra Island.
3. Hug it out in Honduras
If it’s unspoilt, natural paradise you’re after for some rest and relaxation, choose the Central American country of Honduras. Still an emerging tourist destination, this is the perfect spot for soaking up the sunshine, lounging on beautiful beaches of the Caribbean Sea and taking a dip beneath the waters.
The seas here are fantastic for snorkelling and diving. The peaceful Bay Islands are the country’s hot spot, hosting the world’s second largest reef. Here, you’ll be able to lie on the beach one day and swim with turtles, dolphins, manta rays and whale sharks the next. If you want to throw in an excursion or two, the Mayan ruins of Copan in the midst of the jungle are absolutely mesmerising
